I am a British citizen but grew up in the US, I have returned to London and need a National Insurance Number.?

Everywhere I've looked (including going in to a job centre) gives information for people coming in without citizenship, types looking for work permits, etc. Since I didn't live her when I was 16 how do I get a National Insurance Number?
