I am so sorry that I cannot locate this story. There are so many movies, stories, and poems using this metaphor, that I probably missed it in the sheer number of items which come up on a web search. You may want to try a children's librarian or a used book store to find someone who remembers this story. Maybe they can even track down a copy.
